چکیده

A number of recent technological trends have made data intensive applications such as continuous media (audio and video) servers a reality. These servers store and retrieve a large volume of data using magnetic disks. Servers consisting of multiple nodes and large arrays of heterogeneous disk drives have become a fact of life for several reasons. First, magnetic disks might fail. Failed disks are almost always replaced with newer disk models because the current technological trend for these devices is one of annual increase in both performance and storage capacity. Second, storage requirements are ever increasing, forcing servers to be scaled up progressively. In this study we present HERA, a framework that enables parity-based data protection for heterogeneous storage systems. We describe the tradeoffs associated with three alternative HERA techniques: independent subservers, dependent subservers, and disk merging. The novel disk merging approach provides a low cost solution for systems that require highly available secondary storage.

PROUHD : RAID for the end-user

RAID has still not been adopted by most end-users despite its inherent quality such as performance and reliability. Reasons such as complexity of RAID technology (levels, hard/soft), set-up, or support may be given. We believe the main reason is that most end-users own a vast amount of heterogeneous storage devices (USB stick, IDE/SATA/SCSI internal/external hard drives, SD/XD Card, SSD, . . .)...

Reliable Cluster Computing with a New Checkpointing RAID-x Architecture

In a serverless cluster of PCs or workstations, the cluster must allow remote file accesses or parallel I/O directly performed over disks distributed to all client nodes. We introduce a new distributed disk array, called the RAID-x, for use in serverless clusters. The RAID-x architecture is based on an orthogonal striping and mirroring (OSM) scheme, which exploits full-bandwidth and protects th...

Collider Physics at HERA

From 1992 to 2007, HERA, the first electron-proton collider, operated at cms energies of about 320GeV and allowed the investigation of deep-inelastic and photoproduction processes at the highest energy scales accessed thus far. This review is an introduction to, and a summary of, the main results obtained at HERA during its operation. To be published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics ...

Hera-JVM: Abstracting Processor Heterogeneity Behind a Virtual Machine

Heterogeneous multi-core processors, such as the Cell processor, can deliver exceptional performance, however, they are notoriously difficult to program effectively. We present Hera-JVM, a runtime system which hides a processor’s heterogeneity behind a homogeneous virtual machine interface. Preliminary results of three benchmarks running under Hera-JVM are presented. These results suggest a set...

EIDE Disk Arrays and Its Implement

Along with the information high-speed development, RAID, which has large capacity, high availability, and high performance, has played an important role in storage system. Comparison with SCSI disk drive, the body of EIDE disk drive is similar to SCSI’s, but for long time, EIDE disk drive performance is lower than SCSI disk drive’s. Recently,an EIDE drive is rapidly developed. New EIDE drive al...
